Reports surfaced of Khabib Nurmagomedov discussing a fight against Conor McGregor this year.
Khabib Nurmagomedov held a Q&A session in Russia where he was asked about a potential fight against the “Notorious” one and expressed his interest only if the bout takes place this year.
“If he wants to fight this year then we can fight. Otherwise, I don’t know. We won’t wait long. I want to fight Conor and if he can fight, I will fight him.”
McGregor is facing legal issues stemming from the attack on a UFC bus days ahead of UFC 223. The UFC hasn’t issued any form of punishment and it’s not too surprising. In fact, the footage of McGregor trying to lure the “Eagle” out of the bus could find itself in a video package promoting a fight between the two in the near future.
Nurmagomedov stated that should the negotiations take too long, then he’ll gladly move on to the next one. The next one seems to be Dustin Poirier at the moment, but interestingly enough, Nurmagomedov instead mentioned Tony Ferguson and Eddie Alvarez.
“There is Tony Ferguson, but I don’t think he is going to fight soon,” said Nurmagomedov. “Then there is [Eddie] Alvarez, he wants to fight, but there’s something missing. He may or may not know this, but I’ll tell him to go take a hike.”
Eddie Alvarez recently told his fans that he is the only one who can defeat Nurmagomedov. While the proposed Rocky 4 like match up sounds fun, Alvarez holds just one win since losing the UFC lightweight title against McGregor at UFC 205. His fight against Poirier ended in a no contest back at UFC 211. Poirier also put up a better performance against Justin Gaethje than Alvarez earlier this month.
Poirier could be regarded as next in line should McGregor not be up for the Nurmagomedov challenge. Alvarez on the other hand could face Kevin Lee should he get past Edson Barboza tomorrow night at the Boardwalk Hall.
